Reilich Votes To Pass Sex Offender E-Mail Alert Law
Assemblyman votes to alert parents of Level 2 and 3 sex offenders by e-mail alerts
June 22, 2009
Assemblyman Bill Reilich (R,I,C-Greece) voted last week for legislation that will allow parents to sign up for a program alerting them to Level 2 and 3 sex offenders in their neighborhoods. While the sex offender registry is always available online, frequent updates and new entries can make it difficult for parents to sift through the data.
“The protection of our children and our communities has always been a top priority of mine. This legislation will ensure that concerned parents are able to be updated on changes to the sex offender registry for those Level 2 and 3 sex offenders who may be in their communities, thus taking precautions to keep their children safe,” stated Reilich.
The e-mail alerts will be offered free of charge to any resident who chooses to sign up with the Division of Criminal Justice Services (DCJS). This legislation was passed unanimously by the Senate in May and now awaits Governor Paterson’s signature.
