Johns, Elementary Students Craft Valentines For Seniors
February 8, 2012

Assemblyman Mark Johns (R,C-Webster) works alongside a creative pair of students from Jefferson Avenue Elementary School. The assemblyman and the kids talked about how their grandparents and other seniors helped build their communities.

Assemblyman Mark Johns (R,C-Webster) and students from several area schools worked side by side to create tokens of affection and gratitude for local seniors this Valentine’s Day. In addition to the cheer the students’ valentines will bring to these seniors, Johns started the program as a fun educational opportunity for kids to learn about how seniors have positively impacted and shaped the communities where they live. Johns would like to thank the students and educators at DeWitt Road and Klem Road Elementary Schools of the Webster Central School District as well as Brooks Hill and Jefferson Avenue Elementary Schools of Fairport Central School District for participating.

“The students put great care into each valentine they make. I am always amazed by the capacity of our young ones to empathize with others and the joy they get from making others smile, especially our seniors,” said Johns. “They took the lesson to heart, thinking of all the ways that our area seniors have helped them throughout the years. I want to thank these students for the great time I had with them, and I look forward to many more in the future.”

Johns also noted that during the holiday or days meant to commemorate our loved ones, it can be especially difficult for seniors. While some senior citizens are quite active and blessed to be surrounded by family and loved ones, others are not. Assemblyman Johns will be delivering the Valentine’s Day greetings to the Maplewood Estates Senior Center in Fairport on Friday, February 10.
