New York State’s “Dignity For All Students Act” is similar to legislation that I sponsor in the State Assembly, which requires all schools statewide to report any incidents of online harassment involving students. This new law aims to prevent harassment on school grounds and online while giving school officials the ability to punish students. But more needs to be done.
That is why I applaud Monroe County for enacting its cyberbullying legislation today. Under this law, harassment or intimidation of a minor in the 135th Assembly District through electronic means would be a misdemeanor punishable by up to a $1,000 fine and/or a year in jail.
This law is needed to ensure that our children go to school to receive a quality education – not to be taunted, teased and bullied. Bullying and cyberbullying do not just happen at school, but can happen at any time. It is crucial that schools, parents and the entire community band together to recognize and help end this troubling problem for our youth.
