Assemblymen Mark Johns And Sean Hanna To Host Foreclosure Prevention Program To Help Local Homeowners

New York State Assemblymen Mark Johns (R,C-Webster) and Sean T. Hanna (R,C,I-Mendon) are teaming up with the State Department of Financial Services (DFS) to help local homeowners who are struggling to save their homes from foreclosure. DFS representatives will be available to meet with homeowners at the Penfield Town Hall at 3100 Atlantic Avenue on Friday, September 7, 2012 from 10 a.m. to 4 p.m. in the Department of Financial Services’ Mobile Command Center (DFSMCC). “As a member of the Assembly’s Housing Committee, I know it is vital that New York State provides as much assistance as possible to homeowners – especially those dealing with financial problems,” said Johns. “This program allows cash-strapped homeowners the opportunity to meet with foreclosure prevention specialists so that they can maintain the American dream of home ownership.” "Owning a home is the American dream. When hard times jeopardize home ownership, too many people ignore the warning signs," said Hanna. "This event will give struggling homeowners both an opportunity to help themselves and a vehicle for doing so." Governor Cuomo directed DFS to launch the foreclosure prevention program in January as a means of extending help to homeowners in foreclosure or at risk of foreclosure. Since then, the DFS has visited more than a dozen sites with high foreclosure rates throughout the state. “It’s important that homeowners with financial problems know that there are many options available to them if they act sooner, rather than later,” added Benjamin M. Lawsky, Superintendent of DFS. “The foreclosure prevention program allows homeowners to meet one-on-one with foreclosure prevention specialists who are knowledgeable and can offer practical guidance.” The state’s foreclosure prevention program enables the homeowner to have confidential meetings with DFS agents who assess where they stand in the pre-foreclosure or foreclosure process. Assistance in these areas includes:
- Applying for mortgage modifications or assistance for homeowners who already have sought mortgage modifications;
- Interceding on behalf of homeowners with mortgage lenders or services;
- Assisting homeowners in communicating with lenders or services; and
- Accepting complaints from homeowners who believe they were victims of mortgage lending abuses.
