Today, a college degree is as essential as a high school diploma was one hundred years ago. Students deserve degrees, not crushing debt, and we must work together to prepare our children for the jobs of tomorrow’s highly competitive economy. This is why I stay committed to helping our children gain access to higher education without having to mortgage their futures.
The new “Get on Your Feet Loan Forgiveness Program” will provide some relief to our students by paying up to two years of federal loan payments for eligible college graduates, helping them get a start on successful careers. Students who are eligible for the program must have graduated from both high school and college in New York State, earned an undergraduate degree during or after the 2014-15 academic year, been a state resident for 12 consecutive months, make less than $50,000 a year and be enrolled in an income-based or pay-as-you-earn repayment plan.
This is an important step toward making college education affordable, but it’s crucial to build on this positive momentum to ensure even greater access.
