Beephan Celebrates Passage of First Bill, Naming of the Zone Sergeant James G. Sweeney Memorial Bridge

Assemblyman Anil Beephan (R,C-East Fishkill) proudly announced the successful passage of his first bill this week, which honors the esteemed service and memory of Zone Sergeant James G. Sweeney. The newly amended highway law designates a portion of the state highway system as the “Zone Sergeant James G. Sweeney Memorial Bridge,” commemorating Sgt. Sweeney's exemplary contributions to the community and his fellow state troopers.

The designated memorial bridge spans Lime Kiln Road, crossing Interstate Highway 84 in the town of East Fishkill, Dutchess County. This dedication serves as a lasting tribute to Zone Sgt. Sweeney, recognizing his unwavering dedication and selfless commitment to public service throughout his remarkable career.

Sweeney joined the New York State Police following his service with the New York Police Department, bringing his invaluable experience and expertise to Dutchess and Putnam counties. Over the course of nearly three decades, Sweeney ascended to the esteemed rank of zone sergeant within the State Police, solidifying his reputation as a respected leader and a pillar of strength within the law enforcement community.

Beyond his dutiful service as a state trooper, Sweeney actively participated in various organizations, including the Ancient Order of Hibernians, the Fraternal Order of Police, the International Police Association and the Knights of Columbus. Additionally, his tireless advocacy efforts led to the renaming of two overpasses in honor of fallen colleagues and played a crucial role in the establishment of the State Highway Memorial Task Force.

Tragically, Sweeney succumbed to cancer in 2021, a direct consequence of his heroic assignment at ground zero following the events of September 11, 2001. This legislation serves as a poignant and fitting tribute to his extraordinary service and unwavering commitment to protecting and serving his community.

Assemblyman Beephan expresses his deepest gratitude to his fellow legislators, Gov. Hochul and all those who supported this bill, recognizing the profound impact Sweeney had on the lives of countless individuals. The Zone Sergeant James G. Sweeney Memorial Bridge stands as a lasting testament to the legacy of a true hero and will continue to inspire future generations of law enforcement officers to uphold the highest standards of service and dedication.
