Assemblyman Anil Beephan, Jr. (R,C-East Fishkill) & Senator Robert Rolison Announces $503,911 in State Aid for Library Construction to Pawling, Beekman, and LaGrange libraries and the Mid-Hudson Library System during an in-person library tour on August 11th.

• Pawling Free Library has been allocated $151,377 in state library construction funds to construct a Children's wing to their building.
• Beekman Library has been allocated $167,215 in state library construction funds to create a multipurpose meeting room.
• Lagrange Library Association has been allocated $177,108 in state library construction funds to renovate a children's recreation area.
• Mid-Hudson Library Association has been allocated $8,211 in state library construction funds to install EV charging stations at their headquarters.

The allocation of over $500,000 in state grants to our local libraries amplifies our dedication to fostering spaces of growth and exploration,” Beephan said. “These funds will renovate buildings and transform lives, providing avenues for learning, collaboration, and imagination. Our libraries stand as pillars of opportunity, and this investment ensures they remain beacons of enlightenment for all."

I am pleased to announce this critical state funding providing our Dutchess County libraries with the resources they need to continue their mission of literacy and community outreach,” Senator Rolison said. “By supporting community libraries, we invest in the next generation of educated readers and, therefore, well-rounded citizens.”

The funds are from $34 million in capital funds for public library construction and broadband infrastructure projects provided in the FY2022-2023 State Budget.

A recent survey showed a documented need for public library construction and renovation projects totaling more than $1.5 billion. Many of New York's local public libraries are unable to accommodate users with disabilities, are energy inefficient, and cannot provide Internet and computer, and other electronic technologies to users because of outdated and inadequate electrical wiring. Many need more space to house the library's expanding collection, address the need for adequate meeting rooms, or provide public computer access.

Project activities and expenditures eligible for funding from the State Aid for Library Construction Program include financing the construction of new library buildings, construction of additions to existing buildings, and the renovation and rehabilitation of living space. Projects may include roof replacement, purchase and installation of alternative energy resources, new HVAC systems, windows, doors, lighting systems, electrical upgrades, EV charging stations, standby generators, and construction of new or replacement parking lots. Broadband infrastructure projects are also eligible. New furniture, shelving, and computer equipment may be purchased for newly reconfigured or renovated space. Renovations designed to provide accessibility for patrons with disabilities are a high priority.

In the FY2023-2024 State Budget, the Legislature provided $34 million for projects announced in the Summer of 2024.
