Assemblyman Charles D. Lavine was pleased to attend a program at Trinity Lutheran School in Hicksville to present teachers Elyse Pollitt and Karen Lively with citations on behalf of the New York State Assembly for the women’s heroism after what began as a typical, everyday field trip turned to potential disaster when a bus filled with students suddenly caught fire.
Assemblyman Lavine said, “Elyse and Karen showed remarkable courage, leadership and maturity when faced with this frightening situation. They evacuated the children from the bus and led them to a spot out of harm’s way; not one was hurt. Perhaps equally as important, the two young teachers acted with confidence and composure, serving as exemplary role models for their students. I’m sure that as they grow, many of these young children will recount this story when asked the inevitable question, ‘Which of your teachers left the most indelible mark on you?’ Our community is indeed lucky to have teachers of the caliber of Karen and Elyse working with our children.”
