Lavine Introduces Legislation to Save Lives

February 11, 2011

Glen Cove At the request of Nassau County Executive Edward Mangano and the Nassau County Legislature, Assemblyman Charles Lavine has agreed to introduce new legislation that will allow Nassau County to install 50 additional red light cameras at dangerous intersections.

A new report from the Insurance Institute for Highway Safety proves that red light cameras increase driver safety and save lives. According to the study, the overall rate of fatal crashes has declined by 24% in municipalities that have installed the devices, compared to those that still have not.

The study conclusively establishes that drivers are more cautious at intersections to avoid getting a ticket. Crashes at all intersections are down in municipalities that have the red light systems and not just at the intersections that house monitoring devices. This method of traffic enforcement is working and our roads and citizens are safer for it. This measure will be sponsored in the Senate by Senator Charles Fuschillo.
