"This bill simply codifies domestic violence as a serious offense under the penal law, and it prohibits domestic abusers from obtaining a license to carry, possess, or dispose of firearms and it orders the immediate surrender of any firearms that the person owns or possesses…The facts are so disturbingly clear, it's shocking to me that it has taken this long. Two-thirds of all of the women killed with a firearm are killed by their male partner. Women are 78% of the intimate partner homicides in the state of New York. And when a gun is in a home, an abused woman is six times more likely than other abused women to be killed. The time has come to put an end to this, and take firearms out of the hands of those convicted of domestic violence," said Assembly Member Daniel J. O' Donnell during the press conference held introducing a legislative package to prevent and reduce gun violence in New York.
