Assemblymember Steve Stern Welcomes New York State Assembly Speaker Carl E. Heastie to Huntington

Joins with Huntington Supervisor Ed Smyth and Highway Superintendent Andre Sorrentino to Highlight New Equipment and discuss continued support for Infrastructure and Protecting Our Quality of Life

Assemblymember Steve Stern welcomed Speaker Carl E. Heastie to the 10th Assembly District to address issues critical to our community and to visit the Town of Huntington Elwood Facility to see new road milling equipment and garbage trucks funded through State grants for capital and infrastructure improvements.

The Speaker and Assemblymember Stern were joined by Huntington Town Supervisor Ed Smyth and Highway Superintendent Andres Sorrentino, who have utilized state support to secure a new milling machine which will be used to re-pave the thousands of miles of streets in the town, improving quality of life for our residents and reducing wear and tear on vehicles. Additionally, the Town received emergency funding to replace garbage trucks destroyed by fire, enabling Huntington to continue protecting our public health.

“The more we invest in the infrastructure of our communities, the better chance we’re giving future generations,” Speaker Heastie said. “I’m proud of the work we continue to do to ensure our communities have the resources they need to maintain their infrastructure. I’m excited to join Assemblymember Stern to see this work in action today and the impact it’s having on Long Island.”

“This vital support by Speaker Heastie and the New York State Assembly for our Huntington community demonstrates a continued and sustained commitment to our local needs,” Assemblymember Stern said.

Every year since I have served in the Assembly, Speaker Heastie has taken the time to visit and see first-hand what is important to our Huntington community. As a direct result, the Speaker’s support has been essential in delivering

  • Millions in funding for sewer infrastructure in Huntington Station to support downtown revitalization and protect our precious sole-source aquifer.
  • Support for a new Dolan Family Health Center to better serve our local communities and provide needed health care access for our most vulnerable.
  • Funding for Cold Spring Harbor Downtown Revitalization.
  • Investments in our local volunteer fire departments throughout the Town of Huntington for emergency protective equipment, trucks and capital improvements to support our local heroes.
  • Resources to update Otsego Park, home to the Half Hollow Hills Little League and the Challenger Division, which provides opportunity for our children with special needs.
  • Capital funding for our local schools for innovative technology and school safety upgrades to help keep our students and teachers safe.

“In addition to substantial funding for capital projects, Speaker Heastie has demonstrated an ongoing and heartfelt commitment to our residents,” Assemblymember Stern said, including:

  • Funding for Tri Community Youth Agency, which supports our young people with after school activities, tutoring and mentorship.
  • Resources for Housing Help, to assist homeowners facing foreclosure, provide financial literacy education and support homeownership, the keystone of the American Dream.
  • Critical funding for our Veterans including American Legion Post #1244 Greenlawn.
  • Support for the Long Island Cares and Island Harvest Food Banks to help our neighbors in need.
“The Town of Huntington's Highway Department has a lot to be proud of. Under Highway Superintendent Andre Sorrentino’s extraordinary leadership, the Huntington Highway Department has taken on the roads in Town like no other Highway Department before them. With over 860 miles of town roadways in our municipality, that's no small feat. Adding the extra advantage of the Town’s first milling machine, Andre and his team can now handle a significant portion of road paving in-house,” Town of Huntington Supervisor Ed Smyth said.“The entire Town of Huntington, especially our Highway Department, owes a great debt of gratitude to NYS Assemblyman Steve Stern for his efforts and commitment in securing the necessary funding to make the purchase of the milling machine possible. Assemblyman Stern continues to be a great supporter of the Town and its initiatives that need an extra fiscal boost to take them to fruition. We are ever grateful for his advocacy, and we know the residents of the town will be too, as they travel the newly repaved roadways before them.”

"I am grateful for the honor to work hand in hand with Assemblyman Steve Stern, a true ally in our mission to fix our roads, said Town of Huntington Highway Superintendent Andre Sorrentino. “Together, we pave the way to a smoother future."

“I want to express my deepest appreciation to Speaker Heastie for visiting our Long Island neighborhoods to personally experience our natural beauty, our vibrancy and diversity and to further understand the challenges that we face as a suburban New York region,” Assemblymember Stern said. “He continues to demonstrate over the years a true understanding of our community and I look forward to our future successes together in delivering results and preserving the quality of life for our Huntington neighbors.”
