I am proud of the swift action taken by the U.S. House of Representatives today to impeach President Donald J. Trump. A week ago we watched in horror as domestic terrorists incited by the president and his allies flooded the halls of the U.S. Capitol, searching for the vice president and members of Congress, intent on committing acts of violence in our democracy’s most sacred halls. Today, we saw the checks and balances of our constitution at work. From the speaker of one People’s House to another, thank you to Speaker Nancy Pelosi, and thank you to so many of the members of the New York Congressional Delegation who stood for democracy.
I hope the U.S. Senate will follow their example, convict President Trump and remove him from office. We must set the precedent that attempting to violently overturn the results of a free and fair election and the will of the American people will not be tolerated. Actions must have consequences.
