Tague Criticizes Governor’s ‘Apology’ During Daily Address, Slams Majority Deal on Emergency Powers
“I was wrong! After today’s performance by Gov. Cuomo, as he choked himself up and feigned tears for the cameras, it is clear he really does deserve the Emmy he won,” said Tague. “What New Yorkers needed to see today was the governor resign, and what they got instead was a shallow attempt at an apology that did nothing to help anybody he’s hurt.
“Making matters worse, we learned today, as many feared, that the Majority members commitment to rescind the governor’s emergency powers were insincere and would, in fact, grant the governor more substantive power than he wields currently, removing the sunset provision on his emergency powers to let them persist until a federal state of emergency ends. Giving legislators the “power” to “comment” on his executive orders is meaningless, because that’s a power granted to all Americans by the First Amendment of our Constitution and something I’ve been doing for months. In fact, during his briefing today he stated himself he was a part of the three-way deal to supposedly take his powers away.
“Even now, as he is embroiled in scandal and spouting apologies, he continues to operate in the same underhanded manner he always has, a clear signal that his remorse isn’t as sincere as he’d like New York to believe. What the Majority members and the governor have come together to put forward is no restoration of the co-equal branches of government and is an insult to our state government and all who this executive has hurt with his lies and misdeeds.”
