Job Opening: Legislative Aide (Part-Time)

The Legislative Aide will support the office’s legislative work, including analyzing legislation, researching policy issues, meeting with stakeholders, and drafting bill memos. The Legislative Aide will report to the Chief of Staff/Legislative Director, as well as work collaboratively with Assemblymember Valdez, the Communications Director, and the Constituent Services Director.

This is a part-time position at 20 hours/week. Applicants must either live near Albany, NY or be willing to travel to Albany several times per legislative session (typically January – June).

Job Description:

  • Research policy issues relevant to District 37 constituents and New York State residents
  • Analyze legislation, including the state budget and bills proposed by other legislators and organizations
  • Meet with interested parties on various policy issues, including constituents, advocacy organizations, unions, and other elected offices
  • Propose and refine ideas for bill drafts and amendments
  • Draft memos and one-pagers for the Assemblymember’s legislation
  • Brief the Assemblymember and other office staff on relevant policy issues and legislation
  • Take direction from and stay in close communication with the Chief of Staff/Legislative Director
  • Collaborate with the Communications Director to ensure the accuracy of press releases, social media posts, and other public statements
  • Communicate regularly with the Constituent Services Director to stay informed on issues of interest to constituents and to assist in devising appropriate responses
  • Travel to Albany several times per legislative session (or live in the Albany area)

Key Abilities and Experience:

  • Experience with policy or legal work
  • Policy research skills, including basic knowledge of reading and interpreting legal language
  • Excellent oral and written communication skills
  • Demonstrated ability to think and plan strategically, including in a fast-changing, often high stakes environment
  • Ability to interact and work with those who disagree with the office’s positions
  • Excellent organizational and time management skills
  • Knowledge of and familiarity with the political, social, and cultural landscape of the district, as well as ability to develop an understanding of relevant policy issues
  • Flexible working independently and as a member of a team
  • Required to live in New York State upon beginning of employment

Salary and Benefits:

$40,000 minimum starting annual salary for a part-time, 20 hour/week position. This position offers health, vision, and dental insurance as well as a retirement plan. When travel to Albany is necessary, lodging and travel expenses will be paid for. The position also comes with sick days, vacation days, and personal time, as well as state and religious holidays.
