Smith Announces Petition to Repeal Bail Reform Law

Assemblyman Doug Smith (5th District) is encouraging New Yorkers to add their names to his repeal bail reform petition. Public pressure has grown in recent days amid numerous tragedies throughout the state due to the new bail reform law that took effect January 1, 2020.

“It is time for all New Yorkers to stand up and join the fight against this terrible law,” Smith said. “Each day that goes by without reform is another that we risk more preventable damage taking place. Recently in Suffolk County, a young college graduate was killed by a driver who had three prior DWI convictions. The driver, who was arrested, had just been released from custody after a January 1 arrest for tampering with his court mandated ignition interlock device. Astonishingly, after he was charged with manslaughter in this case, he was once again released from custody on his own recognizance. This was the first direct fatality from this law, let’s make it the last.”
