Gandolfo: Hochul’s Housing Plan “Disastrous for Long Island”

“In her budget proposal, Gov. Hochul doubled down on her proposal to transform Long Island into another borough of New York City. Hochul’s housing plan would allow the state to overrule local zoning laws to force high-density housing developments into our communities.

“The governor’s plan would also re-zone areas within a half-mile of a train station. In our district, the required minimum average density in these zones would be 20 residential dwellings per acre. This would dramatically change the character of our small suburban communities along the South Shore for the worse. We do not have the infrastructure to handle such a massive increase in population density. Even if we did, Long Islanders have made it clear that we want local control of our communities and will not stand for overdevelopment.

“Gov. Hohcul’s housing plan will be disastrous for Long Island, and it must be stopped. I will be working with my colleagues in both state and local government to save our suburbs.”
