Assemblyman Joe DeStefano Stands in Strong Support of CHIPS Funding
Assemblyman Joe DeStefano (R,C-Medford) today alongside his colleagues in the Assembly and Senate Minorities as well as county and town highway superintendent from across the state stood at a press conference to voice strong support for increased funding for the Consolidated Local Street and Highway Improvement Program (CHIPS). This critical investment will provide much-needed resources for road repairs and infrastructure improvements across New York state, ensuring safer streets for residents and supporting local economies.
“The CHIPS program is vital to maintaining our roads, bridges and transportation networks,” said DeStefano. “Investing in our infrastructure is not just about fixing potholes—it’s about strengthening our communities, creating jobs and improving public safety. Our local municipalities rely on this funding, and we must ensure they get the resources they need.”
The CHIPS program provides state aid to local governments for road maintenance and rehabilitation. Advocates at today’s press conference highlighted the necessity of securing increased funding in this year’s state budget to address the backlog of needed repairs and upgrades.
“Long Island’s roads are essential for daily commutes, emergency services and commerce,” DeStefano continued. “Without adequate funding, our communities will struggle to keep up with the necessary repairs. I stand with my colleagues in government and our local leaders in demanding a fair allocation of CHIPS funds.”
Local highway superintendents and municipal representatives also emphasized the importance of consistent and sufficient funding to prevent costly infrastructure failures in the future.
DeStefano pledged to continue advocating for increased CHIPS funding in the state budget and urged his fellow legislators to prioritize infrastructure investment.
