Destefano Launches Petition for Gold Star Families’ Bill

Assemblyman Joe DeStefano (R,C,I-Medford) is encouraging constituents to sign a petition to ensure that Assembly Bill 2991 becomes law. The bill would provide Gold Star families free tuition and room and board to SUNY & CUNY institutions. Last week, the Assembly Majority denied the bill from going to the floor for a vote. Assemblywoman Deborah Glick, chairwoman of the Higher Education Committee, called the proposal “an entitlement.” Following this, the bill garnered the support of Gov. Cuomo and President Trump.

“Following the loss of a parent, many families struggle to make ends meet. This bill would ensure that the children of our fallen soldiers can continue their education and obtain a college degree regardless of their financial situation. If the Legislature can pass a $27 million tuition assistance program for illegal residents, the state can afford this smaller investment in the future of gold star families. It’s a small but significant way to honor our fallen military members who have tragically lost their lives in the line of duty.”
