MTA Ignores Cheapskates Who Jump Turnstiles, Instead Raises Fares for Law-Abiding New Yorkers

A statement from Assemblyman John Mikulin (R,C,I,Ref-Bethpage) on the MTA raising its fares

“Just like more taxes won’t solve New York’s issues, higher fares won’t solve the MTA’s. The MTA knows this, having admitted that it realizes higher fares won’t solve the financial problems it is facing. The agency has also admitted that it lost $215 million in revenue in last year alone due to fare jumpers. Law-abiding New Yorkers should not have to suffer simply because the MTA can’t stop cheapskates from jumping the turnstiles. If anything this is only going to encourage dishonest behavior even more. Instead of raising fares and costing honest, hard-working New Yorkers more money, the agency should be focusing on a better collection system to ensure every rider is paying to use the transit system.”
