Mikulin Fights for Containment and Treatment of Grumman-Navy Plume

Assemblyman John Mikulin (R,C,Ref-Bethpage) attended a meeting at Bethpage High School hosted by the NYS Department of Environmental Conservation regarding a proposal to clean the Grumman-Navy Plume on Monday, June 10. The Grumman-Navy Plume, which spreads over a large portion of Mikulin’s district, stems from the facility set up by the Navy and Grumman Aircraft Engineering Corporation in 1937. Concern over contamination of well water began in the 1970s and has remained a concern for nearly 50 years.

“For far too long the pollution of the Grumman-Navy Plume has gone untreated,” said Mikulin. “This is something many of us have had to live with for our entire lives, and it is completely unacceptable. We’ve had many promises in the past that things would be taken care of but little action has been seen. I plan on continuing to push for this plan to move forward this summer. Enough is enough!”

Currently, there is a $585 million state-funded plan to contain the spread of the plume and treat the pollution in the groundwater. A final plan will be picked sometime after July 7, when the DEC’s public comment period closes.
