Assemblyman Zebrowski, Senator Weber, Supervisor Hoehmann Tour Site to Benefit from Recently Signed Cemetery Restoration Funding Bill

Nanuet, NY - Today, Assemblyman Ken Zebrowski, Senator Bill Weber, and Clarkstown Supervisor George Hoehmann celebrated the recent signing of legislation that will allow the town to access state funding for the restoration and repair of three abandoned cemeteries. The cemeteries that will be eligible for the state funding include the Nyack Rural Cemetery and Mount Moor Cemetery, both located in West Nyack, and the Nanuet Cemetery, located in Nanuet. Officials visited the Nanuet Cemetery to discuss how the newly available funding can be utilized.

“This funding from the state will ensure that Clarkstown is able to restore and maintain abandoned cemeteries without negatively impacting taxpayers. I am thankful for my partnership with Senator Weber and Supervisor Hoehmann in passing this bill and to Gov. Hochul for signing it into law. I look forward to seeing the work done to improve these sites,” said Assemblyman Ken Zebrowski.

“I'm grateful that the legislation we introduced aimed at restoring Rockland Cemeteries was signed into law by Governor Kathy Hochul. Thank you to Assemblyman Ken Zebrowski for partnering with me and passing this legislation in the State Assembly. My office will continue working with Assemblyman Zebrowski and Supervisor George Hoehmann's offices to ensure that the African American Mount Moor, Nyack Rural, and Nanuet Cemeteries are restored expeditiously,” said Senator Bill Weber.

“In NYS, abandoned cemeteries become the responsibility of the Town at the expense of the taxpayers.  Several cemeteries in Clarkstown, particularly Nyack Rural Cemetery, Mount Moor Cemetery and Nanuet Cemetery need improvements, restorations, repairs and enhancements. Having the ability to apply for state funding will ensure the proper respect and care is able to be given to those interred at these cemeteries.   Thank you to Senator Weber and Assemblyman Zebrowski for this legislation that will help the town be able to properly care for abandoned cemeteries,” said Clarkstown Supervisor George Hoehmann.

Senator Weber and Assemblyman Zebrowski introduced the legislation (S.6878/A.7121) this year to allow the Town of Clarkstown to access funding made available under state finance law. Gov. Hochul signed the bill in October 2023.
