Basic STAR Re-Registration Program For Homeowners Available From August 19 Through December 31

Assemblyman Michael Fitzpatrick (R,C,I-Smithtown) today is encouraging all homeowners enrolled in the Basic STAR program to re-register in order to continue to receive their exemption in 2014 and subsequent years.

“This year, new legislation was passed to help protect New Yorkers from fraudulent STAR exemptions. Because of this, homeowners must re-register for the program, allowing them to continue to benefit from this tax exemption,” said Fitzpatrick. “I encourage all homeowners to take advantage of this opportunity to continue to receive your exemptions in the future.”

According to the Department of Taxation and Finance, registration began August 19, 2013 and continues through December 31, 2013. Homeowners who currently receive the Basic STAR exemption will be notified through a mass mailing that will include instructions on how to re-register. Homeowners do not need to re-register every year. Based on the information provided, the Tax Department will confirm homeowners’ eligibility in future years.

The fastest and easiest way for homeowners to register is through the Tax Department’s Web site, www.tax.ny.gov. Homeowners who are unable to register online can register over the phone at (518) 457-2036. Those with further questions about the program can visit the following website: http://www.tax.ny.gov/pit/property/star13.htm.

Although there are websites to assist homeowners in applying for the exemption, Smithtown’s Office of the Assessor will provide any help if needed. Residents can call 631-360-7827.
