Fitzpatrick: NYS Senate Term Limit Bill A Step In The Right Direction

Assemblyman Mike Fitzpatrick (R,C,I-Smithtown) commended the New York State Senate’s passage yesterday of Senate Bill 2722-B to enact term limits for state legislative leadership positions.

“In light of recent events regarding the Assembly Speaker, the Senate bill should be passed in the State Assembly as well. I urge my colleagues to support the Senate’s efforts,” said Assemblyman Fitzpatrick. “This will help remove corrupt officials and bring about fresh perspectives with a change in leadership.”

Fitzpatrick sponsors two pieces of legislation, Assembly Bills 4617 and 4662, which, in addition to enacting other reforms for the Legislature, would require term limits for lawmakers. Both bills are currently before the Assembly Governmental Operations Committee.

The assemblyman commented that the Assembly is long overdue for the passage of these reform bills. According to the National Conference of State Legislatures, 15 states currently have term limits for legislators.
