“I commend the jurors for returning the right verdict and delivering justice to the family of Ahmaud Arbery, a young Black man who was senselessly murdered simply for going for a jog. This killing was a disturbing reminder of a dark chapter in our history when people of color, particularly young Black men, could be murdered anytime by white vigilantes. I hope that this just verdict brings some degree of comfort to Mr. Arbery’s loved ones, and that it helps to heal wounds of racism that were torn open by this heinous hate crime. The fact that these three men believed they had the right to stop, intimidate, and then murder an innocent Black man shows we still have a long way to go to eradicate the scourge of racism from our society.”
