Assemblymember Wallace Passes Legislation Ensuring Young People Can Access Certified Gun Safety Instruction
March 2, 2020
The 4-H Shooting Sports Program teaches young people how to use firearms safely and enjoy outdoor recreational activities, said Assemblymember Monica P. Wallace (D-Lancaster). To ensure New Yorkers can take advantage of this important initiative, I passed legislation to update state law to ensure 4-H certified shooting instructors can educate and train young people under the age of 16 at shooting ranges (A.8078-C).
This measure helps ensure Western New York families can access a trusted program for their child to learn how to safely and responsibly use a firearm, Wallace continued. Instructors must pass a background check and complete a nationally approved curriculum that requires 14 hours of education and training to take part in the program. The program ensures children learn about gun safety and appropriate gun-handling techniques. Certified instructors also educate kids about more than firearms as the program focuses on developing skills that will help young people excel in all their endeavors. Ill work with my Assembly colleagues and our Senate partners to build on this important legislation and ensure New Yorkers can easily access certified gun safety instruction in their communities.
