State Assemblyman Nader Sayegh Demands Congress Act to Preserve the Integrity of the Census & Extend the Deadline!

Over 40 New York State legislators join Sayegh to send a letter to Congress

Over 40 New York State Senators and Assembly members have urged Congress to take action to rescue the integrity of the Constitutionally mandated 2020 Census. With the Trump Administration battling in court to shut down the Census in days, Yonkers State Assemblyman Nader Sayegh says members of Congress have a duty to uphold their oath to protect the Constitution and the integrity of the Census.

“It is exceedingly clear that a complete count has not been completed resulting in a dramatic under count especially in urban areas of New York and throughout the country,” said Assemblyman Sayegh (D-Yonkers). “This under count will lead to grave consequences for our residents in every neighborhood across the State of New York.”

The call for Congress to act comes as the Federal District Court for Northern California issued a preliminary injunction preventing the Trump Administration from shutting down Census Field Data Collection operations September 30. This week Commerce Secretary Wilbur Ross has said the door to door field count will end October 5, a decision that will likely send the matter back to the federal courts.

The COVID-19 Pandemic has also taken a toll on our ability to maximize our Field Data Collection operations.

The letter calling for Congress to pass legislation extending 2020 Census field operations until November 30 was sent to Senate Majority Leader Mitch McConnell, Speaker of the House of Representatives Nancy Pelosi, Senate Minority Leader Charles Schumer, The New York State Congressional Delegation and Secretary of the Department of Commerce, Wilbur Ross, whose department oversees the Census.
