Mass COVID-19 Vaccination Site to Open in Yonkers
Joint State-FEMA Effort Will Bring Thousands of Additional COVID Vaccine Doses to Yonkers Residents
Starting March 3, a COVID-19 mass vaccination site in Yonkers plans to deliver 1,000 COVID-19 shots per day. The joint New York State - Federal Emergency Management Agency (FEMA) vaccination effort will be located at the National Guard Armory building at North Broadway and Quincy Place. National Guard and CDC personnel will assist with staffing. The Yonkers site is one of four being set up in New York to get more residents living in socially vulnerable communities vaccinated. The other sites are in Buffalo, Rochester and Albany. Yonkers residents who are eligible for the vaccine will be able to sign up for vaccination at the armory site.
Yonkers Assemblyman Nader Sayegh said: “The residents of Yonkers, especially those living and working in our most socially vulnerable neighborhoods, have suffered greatly during this pandemic. The announcement of 1,000 COVID-19 vaccinations per day is the news we have been hoping and praying for and I urge all my fellow Yonkersites to get vaccinated.
Senate Majority Leader Andrea Stewart-Cousins who represents Yonkers said, "This new COVID-19 vaccination site at the Armory in Southwest Yonkers, supported by FEMA and managed by New York State, is a significant step for our community that I have been strongly advocating for. It will ensure a more equitable local vaccination strategy by providing only verified Yonkers residents with vaccinations at an impressive 1,000 vaccinations a day capacity. I thank our local, state and federal partners for their efforts to help make this happen."
Governor Andrew Cuomo said: “From day one New York has prioritized equitable vaccination access with aggressive efforts targeted at reaching communities that were hit the hardest by COVID. We're putting four new vaccination sites in socially vulnerable communities outside of New York City where we've seen higher positivity rates and lower vaccination rates.”
Yonkers District 1 Councilwoman Shanae Williams said: “I’d like to thank Governor Cuomo, Majority Leader Cousins and Assemblyman Sayegh for making the Armory a vaccination site in Yonkers. The most important thing is that the residents of District 1, who have been impacted the most during this pandemic, now have access to the vaccine. Our community has been hit hard enough, it’s time to help ourselves stay safe and it starts with getting vaccinated.”
Yonkers City Councilwoman Tasha Diaz said: “Despite the efforts of our residents to wear a mask and socially distance, Yonkers still has over 1800 active COVID-19 cases today, so this mass vaccination site is going to save lives. I want to thank Governor Cuomo, Senate Majority Leader Andrea Stewart Cousins and Assemblyman Sayegh for bringing mass vaccinations right to the heart of our most vulnerable neighborhoods.”
