Assemblyman Phil Ramos (D-Central Islip), Chairman of Committee of Veterans’ Affairs, announced that the Assembly passed a resolution honoring military men and women from the United States Military Academy at West Point, as part of the Assembly’s 61st annual West Point Day (K.1203).

“During this year’s West Point Day, it’s essential that we honor the many achievements of our brave military men and women, and recognize the vital role this prestigious military academy has played in our country’s history,” Assemblyman Ramos, said. “This proud tradition emphasizes the highest standards of personal honor, academic achievement and duty – preparing graduates for lives of honorable service.”

Brigadier General Timothy Trainor, the Dean of the Academic Board at West Point, was in attendance during the Assembly session as part of West Point Day. General Trainor is the 13th Dean of the Academic Board at the United States Military Academy, where he previously served as Professor and Head of the Department of Systems Engineering. General Trainor was joined by West Point’s Chaplain, Colonel Mike Durham, Sergeant Major David Brzywczy, and several members of the West Point Society of the Capital District.

In addition, cadets from West Point attended session and were honored for their dedication to service in the military. The cadets – from all across the country – earned admission to West Point through their diligence, intelligence and leadership, Assemblyman Ramos added.

The United States Military Academy was established in 1802 near Newburgh, and has produced notable graduates, including: generals Omar Bradley, George S. Patton and Norman Schwarzkopf, and presidents Ulysses S. Grant and Dwight D. Eisenhower. In addition, the late Assemblyman James T. McNamara, who authored the Assembly’s first West Point Day resolution, attended the academy.

“Graduates of West Point have signed up to defend the United States during a time of unrest around the world,” Assemblyman Ramos said. “Their sacrifice and commitment to protecting our families deserve the highest honor of gratitude and respect. I salute these brave men and women and thank them for their hard work and devotion to our country.”
