Bendett Supports Road Safety Law to Honor Lives Lost and Prevent Future Tragedies

Today, Assemblyman Scott Bendett (R,C-Sand Lake) joined Assemblyman Robert Smullen (R,C-Mohawk Valley and the Adirondacks) and a bipartisan group of legislators in support of the Alexander John Smullen Traffic Safety Memorial Law (A.3938). This proposal, named in honor of Smullen’s late son, Alexander John “AJ” Smullen, seeks to establish a traffic safety memorial sign program to honor victims of fatal vehicle collisions and raise awareness about the dangers of impaired, reckless, and distracted driving.

“This bill is about more than just signs—it’s about remembrance, awareness, and ensuring that no family has to endure such a heartbreaking loss in vain,” said Bendett. “AJ’s story is a painful reminder of how precious life is and why we must do everything we can to promote road safety. I stand with Assemblyman Smullen and all those who have lost loved ones in support of this important initiative.”
