Bendett Celebrates Passage of Purple Heart Bill, Designating New York A Purple Heart State
After two years of steadfast advocacy, Assemblyman Scott Bendett (R,C-Sand Lake) is celebrating the passage of his legislation to officially designate New York as a Purple Heart State. The bill, which had long been stalled in the Assembly, finally secured approval, solidifying New York’s commitment to honoring the bravery and sacrifice of Purple Heart recipients.
“This is a proud day for New York and a long-overdue recognition for the brave men and women who have shed blood in service to our country,” said Bendett. “For two years, I have fought to see this bill passed, and I am grateful that New York is finally taking this step to show our unwavering respect for our wounded veterans.”
For Bendett, this legislation holds deep personal significance. His grandfather, Julius Bendett, was wounded in combat during World War II and awarded the Purple Heart for his sacrifice. Despite being shot in battle, Julius was not sent home—instead, he was transferred to Paris, France, where he learned to make false teeth, a skill that later became his lifelong career.
“My grandfather’s story is just one of thousands across this state—stories of courage, sacrifice, and resilience,” Bendett added. “By making New York a Purple Heart State, we ensure that these heroes receive the recognition and respect they deserve.”
With the passage of this legislation, New York joins a growing list of states that have made a formal commitment to honoring Purple Heart recipients, further strengthening the state’s dedication to its veterans and their families.
