A Clean Sweep: Assemblyman Colton Leads Volunteers in Neighborhood Spruce-Up
Approximately 40 people took to the streets on Saturday, August 26, to sweep, clear catchbasins and bag trash, as part of a community cleanup organized by Assemblyman William Colton (D—Gravesend, Bensonhurst, Bath Beach and Dyker Heights) and Susan Zhuang, who is on unpaid leave from her position as the assemblyman’s chief of staff.
The cleanup began in front of 29 Bay 25th Street. The volunteers then tackled Kings Highway and Avenue U between Stillwell Avenue and Lake Street, as well as Bay Parkway, from 65th Street to around 72nd Street.
“The hard work of the volunteers made a huge difference on these busy commercial strips,” said Assemblyman Colton. “These cleanups are an important contribution to keeping our neighborhoods clean and beautiful places to live, work and raise a family.”
There were around 30 teens in the group, as well as about 10 adults. Included among the volunteers was a team from the Chinese American Social Services Center (CASS).
“Being a part of a community effort such as these cleanups not only benefits the neighborhood and its residents, but it teaches our young people the important lesson that they can make a difference, and that is something that will stay with them throughout their lives,” said Assemblyman Colton.
Assemblyman Colton and Zhuang have organized neighborhood cleanups focusing on local commercial areas for about 10 years. They occur several times each year. Another cleanup is planned for Saturday, September 30.
