New York State Assembly

After months of 24/7 campaigning, over $1 billion in spending and endless, negative 30-second television attack ads, the 2012 presidential campaign has finally concluded. I offer my congratulations to President Obama on his victory and wish him success. He is my President and the President of all Americans.

In addition to the presidential election were contests for the United States Senate, the House of Representatives, and all 213 State Assembly and State Senate seats, in addition to judicial races and certain local offices. I extend my appreciation to everyone who stepped up, put their name on a ballot and offered to serve their communities and fellow citizens. Thank you for being part of our democratic process!

ELECTIONS ARE OVER: IT'S TIME TO GOVERN

Now that the political campaigns have concluded, it is time to work together and govern. In fact, I believe this is the message that voters sent to leaders in Washington, DC as well as Albany, NY. Voters want an end to the partisan bickering and for elected officials to start listening. They also want us to make government work and improve the quality of life for hard-working families.

MUCH TO DO, NO TIME TO WASTE

At the state level, there is no shortage of issues requiring Albany's urgent attention. We need more good-paying jobs. We need to reduce costs and help hard-working families. We need a better economy that works for all New Yorkers. We need to share and communicate America's values of opportunity, prosperity, community and respect.

From a public policy perspective, we need to stop Albany's rules and regulations that strangle local governments with red tape while drowning homeowners in rising property taxes. We need to ensure that our schools, teachers and students have the resources necessary for a world-class education.

We must immediately deliver storm relief that helps our fellow New Yorkers repair, rebuild and renew their communities hit hard by Hurricane Sandy. Nearly 300,000 of our fellow citizens are still without power, even as the temperatures have dropped. Albany should fast-track disaster relief and ensure the federal government does its share. I believe each of these issues rises far above partisan politics.

Based on the results of redistricting, as of January 1, 2013, I will represent the new 131st Assembly District that includes Ontario and Seneca counties. To the families I now have the privilege of representing, I look forward to serving you!

To the families of Cayuga, Cortland and Onondaga counties, I offer my sincere thanks for allowing me the privilege of being your voice in the Assembly. Thank you for your trust and years of kindness and friendship.
