Assembly Minority Leader Brian Kolb (R,C,I-Canandaigua) Statement On Potential Enactment Of A Moreland Commission

"Recent calls for a Moreland Commission unfairly suggest that legislators aren't interested in passing anti-corruption measures. In the Assembly Minority, nothing could be further from the truth.

More than a month ago, I wrote to Governor Cuomo and outlined specific proposals to address abuses of public office. Included in the "Public Officers Accountability Act of 2013" (A.7393) is specific legislation that creates new crimes, reforms member items and campaign finances, replaces JCOPE with a truly independent integrity panel, and enacts term limits for legislative leadership positions.

We have done more than just provide rhetoric in the wake of a scandal. The Assembly Minority Conference committed to implementing anti-corruption measures and restoring the confidence of 19 million New Yorkers. Our proposals were introduced in detail, as legislation - not as a press release - and they go above and beyond anything the Governor or other legislative conferences proposed.

Before anyone suggests we need a Moreland Commission, they should explain why the most comprehensive anti-corruption package has been stalled for so long."
