It's that time of year again - when New York's sportsmen and women prepare for hunting season. The New York State Department of Environmental Conservation (DEC) has announced the various opening dates for small game, big game and waterfowl hunting. NEW SEASON, NEW OPTION FOR LOCAL HUNTERS
I am especially pleased to announce that legislation I sponsored to allow the use of rifles for big game hunting in Ontario County passed both houses of the Legislature and was recently signed into law. Ontario County has an abundance of public lands for hunting, as well as a thriving deer population. The use of rifles during hunting season in Ontario County will help bolster our reputation as an excellent destination for hunters, and allow more visiting sportsmen and women to appreciate our unmatched natural landscape.
NY SPORTSMEN: A LEGACY CONTINUED
New York's sports enthusiasts enjoy a long and proud legacy. Hunters and fishermen were the original environmental stewards, when the notion of conservation was in its infancy. Former President Theodore Roosevelt, who was an accomplished big-game hunter in his own right, recognized the need for the preservation of open space. As Governor of New York, Roosevelt enacted initiatives that made our state a leader in the emerging conservation movement.
Today, New York's outdoor enthusiasts are continuing that tradition by assisting the DEC in stocking streams and lakes with fish and placing pheasants into fields and woods. Sportsmen have also led the way in educating a new generation of outdoorsmen and women, all while instilling a respect for our natural resources and the need to preserve and protect them.
Most importantly, I urge all those heading out this hunting season to practice safety first and maintain the positive momentum from last hunting season which was one of the safest on record in New York. I wish everyone, a safe and enjoyable hunting season.
