Show Your Support This Season - Shop Local
Legislative column from Assembly Minority Leader Brian M. Kolb (R,C,I-Canandaigua)

National Small Business Saturday was recently celebrated across the nation and by all accounts, it was a huge success. According to the National Federation of Independent Business (NFIB) and American Express, 88 million consumers participated and shopped small. These results highlight the impact we can make, which is why I am encouraging everyone to shop locally this holiday season.

HOLIDAY HELP FOR OUR COMMUNITIES

Our local businesses drive our economy, provide jobs for our families and neighbors, and support charities and community groups. Small-business owners are the ones who embody the "American Dream" by demonstrating the courage, determination and hard work it takes to run and operate a business. For many small business owners, this is their most important time of year. A successful holiday rush can establish sustained success for the coming year. We can do our part by simply choosing the goods and services we need right here in our hometown.

APPRECIATING THE EXPERIENCE

There is nothing quite like the holidays in the Finger Lakes. As the streets light up with holiday cheer, it's the perfect opportunity to shop for the special people on your list. Finger Lakes businesses have something to offer everyone, from unique crafts and antiques to homemade clothing and goods. With the hustle and bustle of holiday preparations, there isn't always time to shop for a specific item. Gift cards to our local restaurants, shops and salons are a quick and easy way to share the holiday spirit.

Don't forget to add a taste of the Finger Lakes to your holiday table. The Finger Lakes continues to be recognized around the world for its award-winning wines and cheeses. And if you prefer beer with your holiday festivities, there are plenty of delicious craft beers available. Let's not forget dessert! Enjoy a trip to your local bakeries for homemade cakes, pies, cookies and more.

Keeping our resources here in the Finger Lakes not only supports our local businesses but strengthens our community and provides for a memorable holiday experience. I wish you all a happy and enjoyable holiday season!
