A02474 Memo:

 BILL NUMBER: A2474

TITLE OF BILL : An act to amend the general business law, in
relation to the unlawful sale of law enforcement identification

PURPOSE OF BILL : Makes provisions regarding the unlawful sale of
law enforcement identification.

SUMMARY OF SPECIFIC PROVISIONS : The general business law is amended
by adding a new section 139 which precludes the sale of full size
police badges and insignias at retail stores or flea markets for the
purpose of preventing individuals from presenting themselves as police
and peace officers.

JUSTIFICATION : Recently, there has been a drastic increase in the
number of look-alike police badges sold in New York State. This bill
would not only further protect public safety, but maintain the
integrity of the status of being a police/peace officer.

 FISCAL IMPLICATIONS : None.

EFFECTIVE DATE : This act shall take effect on the thirtieth day
after it shall have become a law.
