NEW YORK STATE ASSEMBLY MEMORANDUM IN SUPPORT OF LEGISLATION submitted in accordance with Assembly Rule III, Sec 1(f)

BILL NUMBER: A8370
SPONSOR: Lavine

TITLE OF BILL: An act to amend the state law, in relation to naming
apple crumb pie the official pie of the state of New York

PURPOSE:
To name the Apple Crumb Pie as the official pie of New York State.

SUMMARY OF PROVISIONS:
The state law is amended by adding a new section 90, naming apple crumb
pie the official pie of New York.

JUSTIFICATION:
The apple has played an important role in the lives of New Yorkers since
the first apple nursery was created in Flushing New York in 1730.
According to the New York Apple Association, New York State has become
the home of approximately 694 commercial apple growers that produce on
average 29.5 million bushels annually. These factors have advanced New
York State in becoming the second-largest apple producing market in the
country. This industry employs thousands of New Yorkers, both directly
and indirectly.
Rob Brigati is the Chief Baker at White Post Farms, located in Melville
New York. This farm is a local small business off of Jericho Turnpike
that serves residents with local products, produced and made by the
local community. Recently the farm had entered and won the American Pie
Council's National Pie Championship for 2015, for their Apple Crumb Pie.
Bakers from all over the country have been entering this contest for 35
to 40 years and have never won. However, with the use of New York apples
and New York water, White Post Farms was able to take home 2 wins on
their first try.
Apple Crumb Pie brings the classic apple pie up to the next level. No
dessert is more fitting for New York State than a Pie that strives to be
even better. The Apple Crumb pie characterizes the New York Citizens who
are constantly creating and innovating to make what is great, even
greater. The economic and social impact of the apple in the State is
reason enough to name the Apple Crumb Pie the official state pie of New
York.
