AN ACT in relation to authorizing the commissioner of education to
conduct a study regarding computer science curriculum within the state
The People of the State of New York, represented in Senate and Assem-bly, do enact as follows:
1 Section 1. The commissioner of education is authorized and directed to
2 conduct a study regarding computer science curriculum within the state.
3 For purposes of this act, the term "qualified institution" shall mean
4 every public and private school in New York state that instructs any
5 students in grades kindergarten through twelve. Such study shall focus
6 on the availability of such curriculum at all qualified institutions,
7 and shall include but not be limited to:
8 1. a description of all offered computer science related classes;
9 2. the academic year computer science instruction becomes available at
10 each qualifying institution and a description of its specific form;
11 3. the existence of any specific science, technology, engineering and
12 mathematics (STEM) program at each qualifying institution and what such
13 program includes; and
14 4. all computer science extracurricular activities offered.
15 § 2. A report of the findings of such study and recommendations of the
16 commissioner of education shall be delivered to the governor, the tempo-
17 rary president of the senate, the speaker of the assembly, the minority
18 leader of the senate and the minority leader of the assembly within one
19 year of the effective date of this act.
20 § 3. This act shall take effect immediately.
