CONGRATULATING Johan Santana on throwing the first
no-hitter in the 50-year history of the New York
Mets on June 1, 2012
WHEREAS, It is incumbent upon the people of the State of New York to
recognize and acknowledge those notable feats which add to the fabric of
New York State and inspire our citizenry; and
WHEREAS, From time to time this Legislative Body takes note of
certain extraordinary individuals and achievements it wishes to
recognize and publicly acknowledge; and
WHEREAS, This Legislative Body is justly proud to congratulate Mets
pitcher Johan Santana on throwing the first no-hitter in the 50-year
history of the New York Mets on June 1, 2012; and
WHEREAS, The New York Mets are in the midst of celebrating their
50th Anniversary Season; and
WHEREAS, Throughout their history, the Mets have added to the rich
history of National League baseball in New York including two memorable
World Championships and numerous great players who have energized and
inspired Mets fans throughout New York State; and
WHEREAS, Throughout this storied history, the Mets have been known
for their great pitchers such as Tom Seaver, Jerry Koosman, Nolan Ryan,
Dwight Gooden, Ron Darling, David Cone, Pedro Martinez and Johan
Santana; and
WHEREAS, The Mets franchise has also been known for numerous quirks
from the ineptitude of the 1962 Mets to its beloved mascot Mr. Met to
the well-known fact amongst Mets fans that the team was one of only two
Major League Baseball clubs that had never had a pitcher throw a
no-hitter; and
WHEREAS, In 8,019 regular season games that the Mets had played
prior to June 1, 2012, they had thrown 35 one-hitters and had seven
pitchers throw no-hitters after leaving the Mets for other clubs; and
WHEREAS, Johan Santana has been known as one of the best starting
pitchers in Major League baseball for the better part of a decade,
having won two Cy Young Awards prior to his trade to the New York Mets
before the 2008 season; and
WHEREAS, Johan Santana had performed as an "Ace" pitcher during his
Mets career prior to undergoing surgery on his pitching shoulder in 2010
and missing the entire 2011 season; and
WHEREAS, Johan Santana rehabbed the injury for over a year to
prepare for the 2012 season and many doubted he could return as a
capable starting pitcher; Johan Santana pitched for the Mets on their
50th Opening Day just 19 months after his serious surgery; and
WHEREAS, The spirit with which Johan Santana pitches and his
determination to overcome adversity as he recovered from his injury
truly embodies the spirit of all New Yorkers; and
WHEREAS, It is the sense of this Legislative Body to commend
individuals of outstanding character who have shown initiative and
commitment toward constantly pursuing higher goals for themselves, and
acting as role models of leadership to be emulated by both peers and
young people; now, therefore, be it
RESOLVED, That this Legislative Body pause in its deliberations to
honor Johan Santana on the occasion of pitching the first no-hitter in
New York Mets franchise history on June 1, 2012; and be it further
RESOLVED, That this Legislative Body pause further to congratulate
the entire New York Mets organization on this historic feat including
Manager Terry Collins, and Whitestone, Queens, native Mike Baxter, whose
great catch to preserve Santana's no-hitter will never be forgotten by
Mets fans; and be it further
RESOLVED, That copies of this Resolution, suitably engrossed, be
transmitted to Mets Starting Pitcher Johan Santana and the Mets
organization.
