WHEREAS, The New York Mets are in the midst of celebrating their

World Championships and numerous great players who have energized and
inspired Mets fans throughout New York State; and

WHEREAS, Throughout this storied history, the Mets have been known
for their great pitchers such as Tom Seaver, Jerry Koosman, Nolan Ryan,
Dwight Gooden, Ron Darling, David Cone, Pedro Martinez and Johan
Santana; and

WHEREAS, The Mets franchise has also been known for numerous quirks
from the ineptitude of the 1962 Mets to its beloved mascot Mr. Met to
the well-known fact amongst Mets fans that the team was one of only two
Major League Baseball clubs that had never had a pitcher throw a
no-hitter; and

WHEREAS, In 8,019 regular season games that the Mets had played
prior to June 1, 2012, they had thrown 35 one-hitters and had seven
pitchers throw no-hitters after leaving the Mets for other clubs; and

WHEREAS, Johan Santana has been known as one of the best starting
pitchers in Major League baseball for the better part of a decade,
having won two Cy Young Awards prior to his trade to the New York Mets
before the 2008 season; and

WHEREAS, Johan Santana had performed as an "Ace" pitcher during his
Mets career prior to undergoing surgery on his pitching shoulder in 2010
and missing the entire 2011 season; and

WHEREAS, Johan Santana rehabbed the injury for over a year to
prepare for the 2012 season and many doubted he could return as a
capable starting pitcher; Johan Santana pitched for the Mets on their
50th Opening Day just 19 months after his serious surgery; and

WHEREAS, The spirit with which Johan Santana pitches and his
determination to overcome adversity as he recovered from his injury

individuals of outstanding character who have shown initiative and
commitment toward constantly pursuing higher goals for themselves, and
acting as role models of leadership to be emulated by both peers and
young people; now, therefore, be it

RESOLVED, That this Legislative Body pause in its deliberations to
honor Johan Santana on the occasion of pitching the first no-hitter in

Mets fans; and be it further

RESOLVED, That copies of this Resolution, suitably engrossed, be
