Representatives of non-public schools recently visited their state legislators in Albany to address an unfunded state mandate on private schools that has caused increased costs for families who choose a private school education for their children.

Delegates from Teach New York and the Educational Alliance for Children in New York State met with Assemblyman Harvey Weisenberg (D-Nassau County) on February 29th to discuss the mandate and to request his assistance in helping them to change the existing formula to gain a fairer reimbursement to schools.

Assemblyman Weisenberg responded to the groupís request by writing to Speaker Sheldon Silver and by joining several other Assembly Members in sponsoring a separate bill that would allow private schools to be fully reimbursed for their actual costs in complying with state's mandate. As a sponsor of the bill, Assemblyman Weisenberg has pledged to advocate for and vote in favor of it when it comes before the full Assembly.
