"It's very important that people realize this is a public health crisis and much like other public issues, such as tobacco, heart disease, motor vehicle accidents. We need research to demonstrate ways that we can deal with that … that's going to protect people and save lives. And so for example if we didn't research motor vehicle accidents we wouldn't know about the value of seat belts or those medians in the middle of the highway that protect so many people from oncoming traffic.  It's really important, those are very  life-saving techniques and they came about through research. We believe that the same is true about gun violence," said Assembymember Jo Anne Simon while explaining her petition to create Firearms Violence Research Institute in the 2018-19 state budget.
