Brooklyn, NY – In an August 2, 2006 letter to Chairman Charles Gargano, Assemblywoman Joan L. Millman urged the Empire State Development Corporation (ESDC) to postpone the public hearing on the Draft Environmental Impact Statement (DEIS) for the proposed Atlantic Yards development.
Currently set for August 23, 2006, the public hearing is scheduled to take place only five weeks after the 1,400 page DEIS was released on July 18. The short timeframe, Assemblywoman Millman argues, will prevent members of the community from fully reviewing and analyzing the document, severely limiting the public’s ability to develop an informed response. Additionally, the August 23rd hearing date will further limit the number of people who will be able to attend the public hearing, as many will not have returned from summer vacations.
Assemblywoman Millman stated in her letter to the ESDC Chairman that the DEIS review process should be centered around public input: “Encouraging public participation is essential to improving the proposed project and mitigating the detrimental effects of development on the surrounding communities.”
Assemblywoman Millman said that the 1,400 page document, which is highly technical and dense, is not your typical summer reading. The DEIS, she said, “is almost as overwhelming as the project itself.”
