Brooklyn – Yesterday the Assembly voted to pass legislation introduced by Assemblywoman Joan L. Millman to improve pedestrian safety. Assembly Bill 5869 would require delivery and other large trucks to be equipped with “cross over” convex mirrors on the front of the vehicle. These mirrors would eliminate the blind spot that often obscure pedestrians crossing directly in front of the vehicle. Convex mirrors have been required on school buses since the 1970s.
“This simple requirement will go a long way in protecting pedestrians in the City,” said Millman, a member of the Assembly’s Transportation Committee. “I am pleased that my colleagues in the Assembly supported this bill and hope it passes in the Senate and can be signed into law. We all benefit when our city streets are safer.”
In New York City, accidents involving trucks and pedestrians resulted in 204 deaths and 4,698 injuries from 1994 to 2003.
