Millman Legislation Protects Voting Rights for Military
March 3, 2011
Assemblywoman Joan Millman, Chair of the Assembly Election Law Committee issued the following statement in favor of legislation she introduced and sponsored to protect the voting rights for members of the military. “Today, I cast my vote in favor of legislation increasing the period between the governor’s proclamation of a special election and the date of that election by 40 days at a minimum. Current law does not allow adequate time for the finalization and transmission of military ballots to overseas servicemen and women – as well as Americans living abroad – by boards of elections, making it problematic for these individuals to cast their votes.
“This legislation will help ensure that every ballot is counted in special elections, most notably the ones cast by the brave New Yorkers serving in the military services who sacrifice so much to protect our loved ones, our nation and our democracy.”
