Report to Community Board 6
October 10, 2007

Public Hearing on Former Con Edison Waterside Site: On September 20th, Assemblymember Kavanagh attended Community Board 6s hearing to ask questions and voice concerns over the proposal by the East River Realty Company for the former Con Edison Waterside site. Assemblymember Kavanagh looks forward to working with the Community Board, colleagues in government, and community residents to ensure that the development is not overwhelmingly tall or dense, that open space is adequate and accessible, that a significant amount of affordable housing is included, that adequate provision is made for schools and other community facilities, and that the plan does not otherwise unduly impact the quality of life of this community.

Kavanagh Participates in Resident for a Day: Assemblymember Kavanagh and Senator Tom Duane participated in the Resident for a Day program at New York University Medical Center on September 27th. The program enables legislators to come away with a better understanding of Graduate Medical Education (GME). This issue will be increasingly significant as the New York State Council on Graduate Medical Education and Health Commissioner Richard Daines make recommendations for the next State Budget for FY 2008-2009 by mid-November. The legislature will then have the opportunity to review the proposals during the next regular legislative session in January.

Kavanagh Attends ConEd Soil Contamination Briefing: Assemblymember Kavanagh joined other elected officials and community members at a briefing to discuss the recent study released to the public by Con Edison, the City Department of Health and the State Department of Environmental Conservation. While no contamination was found in the buildings or in the surface soil around Stuyvesant Town and Peter Cooper Village, Assemblymember Kavanagh continues to closely monitor the additional testing that will take place around the East River and Stuyvesant Cove Park.
