On February 21, 2009, a coalition organized to save the M8 bus route held a rally near the bus’s Astor Place stop. Assemblymember Brian Kavanagh, who was represented at the rally, has been working in Albany to identify funding to help the MTA avoid a dramatic series of service changes and fare increases – including the elimination of the M8 bus line. Kavanagh strongly opposes this and other cuts to public transportation at a time of economic and environmental crisis.
While he is working with this grassroots coalition of community advocates and elected officials to protest the cuts locally, he continues to work in Albany to find the funding the MTA desperately needs to balance its operating and capital budgets. Kavanagh attended the MTA’s Manhattan hearing on the cuts and proposed fare increases on January 14th, and encourages anyone interested in testifying to mail testimony to Douglas Sussman, the MTA’s Director of Community Affairs, at 347 Madison Avenue, New York, NY 10017.
