Assemblymember Brian Kavanagh joined public housing residents, advocates, and government officials at a series of events on the Lower East Side on Saturday morning, October 10, 2009.
Kavanagh first greeted Wald Houses residents who were departing at 8:00 a.m. for an all-day recreational bus trip to Pennsylvania, organized and led by Wald Tenants Association President Charlotte Miles.
Later in the morning, Kavanagh joined Campos Plaza Tenants Association President Dereese Huff, other residents and tenant leaders, organizers from Good Old Lower East Side and Community Voices Heard, and New York City Housing Authority staff to welcome Deputy Assistant Secretary Deborah Hernandez of the United States Department of Housing and Urban Development for a tour of Lower East Side public housing. Kavanagh and the group visited Baruch Houses and Campos Plaza, discussed living conditions and community issues with residents, and examined serious maintenance problems in some apartments, including severe mold in the interior of apartments in Campos Plaza.
The group then convened a round table discussion, joined by State Senator Daniel Squadron and Councilmember Rosie Mendez, to share community concerns with the Deputy Assistant Secretary and to discuss the direction of federal public housing policy.
