Assemblyman Zebrowski on Common Core Delay Legislation

For months my colleagues and I have heard the concerns and challenges regarding the flawed implementation of the Common Core curriculum. Today, I am pleased to announce that the Assembly passed a bill that I sponsored that will take immediate action against the rushed roll-out of Common Core (A.8929). The legislation will take several steps in adjusting the implementation by first delaying high stakes testing for two years and detaching common core assessments from teacher evaluations. The bill also requires the State Education Department (SED) to find ways to eliminate unnecessary testing and implement needed protections of student data. This delay will provide SED the much needed time to better develop an appropriate curriculum that is successful for teachers, school districts, parents, and most importantly, our students.
