Friend Sponsors Legislation Barring Sex Offenders From Living Within 1,000 Feet Of Schools, Parks, And Daycares

Assemblyman Christopher Friend (R,C,I – Big Flats) has signed on to Assembly Bill A.3134, legislation that would bar convicted sex offenders from living within 1,000 feet of schools, childcare services, and parks. Recently, the New York Court of Appeals ruled that this action is solely a state responsibility.

“As long as the court will hold this troubling opinion of the rights of local governments to police themselves, the state is going to have to act,” Friend said. “I am proud to sponsor this legislation, and look forward to seeing it through to law. This is a common-sense reform designed to keep our children out of the reach of those who may cause them harm. Signing this bill into law will assuredly ease the minds of parents across the state.”

Assemblyman Christopher Friend is the Ranking Minority Member on the Local Governments Committee.
