Assemblywoman Barbara Lifton (D/WF- 125th District) was named today, the Chair of the Assembly Steering Committee by the Assembly Speaker, Sheldon Silver.
The Steering Committee is comprised of a subset of the whole conference, reflecting the full spectrum of the Assembly Majority Conference, Upstate and Downstate, urban, rural and suburban, as well as the racial, ethnic and gender diversity in the conference.
“The committee is convened whenever there is a major new issue before us that needs direction. The Steering Committee discusses the issue, hears all views, and seeks to find common ground for the entire conference,” Lifton explained. “Draft or revised legislation often results from this committee that then goes before the full conference.”
Lifton was appointed as a member of the Steering Committee in 2005, Vice-Chair in 2010, and has participated in formulating policy on such topics as congestion pricing and ethics. “I very much look forward to the additional responsibilities of helping to lead, this critical leadership group,” Lifton said.
